What Defines a Fever?

  • Rectal temperature 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
  • Babies under 3 months: any fever = immediate medical check
  • Older infants: short fevers may be part of natural immune defense

Common Illnesses:

  • Colds/Flu → Runny nose, cough, irritability
  • Ear Infections → Ear pulling, fussiness, disrupted sleep
  • Stomach Bugs → Vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration risk
  • Respiratory Illnesses (RSV, Bronchiolitis, etc.) → Wheezing, labored breathing

Seek Medical Care Immediately If:

  • Fever in baby under 3 months
  • Fever lasting >3 days
  • Breathing difficulties, bluish lips/skin
  • Persistent vomiting or refusal to feed
  • Extreme lethargy, seizure, rash, or inconsolable crying

At-Home Care Tips:

  • Encourage breastmilk/formula or water (if age-appropriate)
  • Keep baby cool and lightly dressed
  • Use a cool cloth on forehead for comfort
  • Maintain calm surroundings and let baby rest
